Movies, Movies, Movies

With the advent of Redbox and the cheap-o movie theater, my darling little family has been able to see a lot more movies than we used to back in the day.  Over the last few months we have watched more movies than in the previous year.  For Christmas, we had a movie marathon instead of visiting family.  When the kids get a few dollars for their birthdays, they choose to go watch movies at the $2 theater instead of buying crap.

Here’s a list of a few of the movies we have seen over the last three or four months.  I’m sure there are a ton I have forgetten about.  I can think of the people in a few but can’t remember the names of them.  Also, not all of these movies were super good.  Some just plain sucked.

  • Jack and Jill~~~This was funnier than I thought it’d be-no great movie but good entertainment.  Plus I love Al Pacino.
  • Spongebob Squarepants: SpongeBob’s Frozen Face-Off
  • The Help~~~I laughed, I cried, I fell in love with Emma Stone even more.
  • Real Steel~~~I love me some Hugh Jackman.  Yummy.
  • Texas Killing Fields
  • Happy Feet Two~~~Damn pregnancy hormones made me cry.
  • Puss In Boots~~~Much better than I thought it’d be.
  • The Smurfs
  • Drive~~~A bit strange but good.
  • Ides of March
  • Paranormal Activity 3~~~Went too far with it’s premise and it took way beyond your normal ghost story.
  • The Devil Inside~~~They had me until the end.  Great premise though.
  • Hop
  • Bridesmaids~~~I laughed until I cried.
  • Inception
  • Super 8
  • Fast Five~~~Lame plot line but come on, Vin Diesel and The Rock together.  Mmmmmm.
  • Transformers: Dark of The Moon
  • Cars 2
  • Hangover Part II
  • Limitless
  • Kung Fu Panda 2
  • Adjustment Bureau
  • The Rite
  • 13~~~An indy film with 50 Cent, Jason Statham, and Mickey Rourke.  So weird but I loved it.
  • Zookeeper~~~Lame, lame, lame.
  • Due Date~~~I’m still laughing!
  • Crazy Stupid Love
  • Townies~~~Oh Ben Affleck how I love thee.
  • Alvin & The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked~~~It sucked so bad, my boys wanted to leave the theater after 20 minutes, no lie.
  • Taken

Book Review: Alone (Vampires and the Life of Erin Rose) by Steve Perlow

About the Book

Twenty-two-year-old Erin Rose wakes up one morning with no memory of her past. She’s in a strange apartment with only one clue: a vampire bite scar on her neck.

Determined to unravel the mystery of her true identity, she contacts the Spectavi vampires, who drink synthetic blood. When they can’t help her, she turns to the Sanguans, who feed on humans. Her investigation leads her deep into a centuries-old vampire war.

Erin must decide how far she’s willing to go to learn the truth about her origins.

Fat Girl Thinks…

This is a hard book to review because I know it’s going to look like I’m tearing it to pieces, but I only do that with books I read that I feel have a lot of good/a lot of potential. Alone is definitely one of those books. I love stories that involve amnesia and having to investigate to find out ones identity. I also like Perlow’s choice to separate out the vampires and giving them a ‘who is the real bad guy?’ war between them.

That being said, Alone doesn’t quite make it as a favourite for a few reasons.

After the first chapter, the reader jumps two years into the future. I didn’t understand the jump or even the purpose of the jump. At no point did I feel it was necessary to the plot to have that jump.

I think the matter of Erin’s amnesia could have been handled better. Admittedly, in this day and age, amnesia like hers is hard to handle – especially when you want to keep the reader in the dark – but it continued to bother me throughout the book.

For example, she has a license, a lease on an apartment and a bank account – all of which you need a good amount of identifying documentation to get. If all of that had been set up for her, documents forged, officials bought off… Anything like that could have worked for the story, but those things simply weren’t addressed and it didn’t work at all for me. Even more so after the two year jump when she had more than enough time to find these things out.

Erin herself was a cold character. She seemed to be more vampire than the vampires with little emotions and little response to pain – even her fingers being broken. Little touches could have gone a long way to making Erin seem more human.

Yet, even with those things, I kept reading. I got sucked into the mystery and wanted to keep going. In that, Perlow did very well.

Fat Girl Says…

This is a decent story with a lot of potential, but you could do better to wait and read a later book from this author.

Hello? Is It Me Your Looking For?

All of sudden I feel like an adult.  An adult mom with too much to do.

I’ve never been known to be lazy but I pretty much have my schedule handled.  Even when my husband was a trucker and it was just me and the kids, I had my shit together.  These days?  Oy, I’m lucky if all my clothes are not inside out.

Homework time

Homework time (Photo credit: cesarastudillo)

I have started school again after about 4 months off.  I obtained my associate degree in November and now have moved onto obtaining my bachelor degree.  My previous 2 years of schooling was strictly online.  Now I have some in an actual classroom and the rest online.  It is a big adjustment, let me tell you.  In a good way but still.  These classes are much more intensive since they are my core classes.

Plus, my son starts soccer this week-if the rain stops. With at least two practices and one game a week for the next 8-9 weeks, it adds up quick.  I also volunteer at his school at least one day a week, sometimes more.

Then there’s the whole pregnant thing and I have to keep visiting the good ‘ol doctor since my darling fetus keeps my blood pressure high.

And throughout all of that, I have some photo shoots lined up too.  Well, as long as the weather cooperates.

I went from maybe one or two commitments a week to daily commitments.  Homework daily, soccer up to three times a week, volunteering at least once a week, learning team meetings at least once a week (for school), doctor every couple of weeks, plus all the normal life stuff.

I’m not seeking adulation for being oh-so-awesome.  But I tell you, it hit quick and it hit hard.  Let’s hope I can tough out the next few months before popping out this baby without completely wearing myself out.

Book Review: A Little Bit of Passion by Beate Boeker

About the Book

Karen calls herself a modern gypsy because she has split her life into two perfect halves: In winter, she’s a skiing teacher in the Teton Mountain Range, and in summer, she works at her book store on Long Island.

But one Easter holiday, John and his son Gerry join her skiing group, and her perfect universe is shaken. Her e-mails to her best friend Leslie are without restraint, ironic and illogical, furious and funny, sensitive and sad – just like her life.

But can she overcome her need for independence and find a compromise between her free life and the man who might be the love of her life?

Fat Girl Thinks…

A Little Bit of Passion focuses on emails exchanged between Karen Larsen and her best friend Leslie. While Leslie more short emails, Karen has an easy flow to her writing the got me right into the story. Just a couple emails and it felt like I was sitting at a table listening to a conversation between two friends.

Of course, the two friends are fun to listen to. Leslie’s vivaciousness comes through easily and she encourages Karen to open up so the readers get in on all the good stuff.

I thought I would have trouble with the email exchange way this book is written, but I actually enjoyed it a lot. Karen is a prolific email writer, giving me the full sense of the setting and characters around her while keeping the story moving along at a good pace because she doesn’t get bogged down with too many details.

The best part for me about this book as a whole is that neither Karen nor Leslie use netspeak and the emails are distinguished from each other by italics rather than email headers. Those two factors made this book so much easier to read than other email exchange books and fit the style of the story itself.

Fat Girl Says…

I highly enjoyed this email style book and recommend it as a happy, relaxed romance.

Book Review: 101 Things to Do Before You Diet by Mimi Spencer

The Book

We all know that diets don’t work, yet most of us continue to be swayed by their promise. After all, who doesn’t want to be a little bit thinner? Who doesn’t want to zip her skinny jeans without (literally) holding her breath? You can’t blame a girl for trying even the most desperate of measures.

As a fashion and beauty journalist, Mimi Spencer spends much of her time surrounded by the catwalk elite, engulfed in the culture of thin. Fed up with years of deprivation and dieting, she created the anti-diet. In 101 Things to Do Before You Diet, Spencer shares her strategies for trimming and flattering every inch of your body and shows you how she finally lost those pesky last few pounds – and how you can, too.

Fat Girl Thinks…

This is one of the very few books I have bought after reading someone else’s glowing review.

Mimi Spencer has taken on the world of trying to get ‘trim, taut and terrific’ like many others, but she has done it in an anti-diet way through common sense. Flitting through everything from how to cut those extra calories to bum and tum flattering apparel, Spencer takes an all-around approach to getting you looking and feeling great.

I have to say, as someone who is used to reading books about either what I should be doing with my body or how horrible I’ve been to my body without realizing it, it was a relief to read a book that treated me like a person. And a woman.

The best part about this book is that Mimi Spencer knows that no matter how good or bad you look on the outside, you will never be the woman you want to be without feeling sexy on the inside. This is a point that so many books just plain ignore, and is something that really made me feel comfortable ‘listening’ to Spencer’s tips.

The ‘101 Steps’ layout of this book makes it a great ‘pick up, put down’ kind of book. While that doesn’t work for fiction, it does for this because it gives you plenty of time to really think about what Spencer is saying.

I couldn’t agree with all her suggestions – Tip 27: Buy a Corset should have ‘if you have $200 to spare’ attached to it – and found some of the fashion parts to be a bit boring. I don’t care if pointy-toed heels are fashionable; I think they look horrible. I also don’t have the money to get the clothes she suggests.

However, despite my brief boredom with a few fashion tips, I quite liked this book. Her tips are common sense and don’t leave you with any excuses while still being sympathetic because it’s all coming from a woman who knows. I look at Spencer’s picture and wonder what in the world she has to complain about, but the words say more than just looking at her ever could.

As a credit to how many studies she quotes and the kind of studies, I am not handing this book off until I get time to investigate some of them. A lot of the things quoted are recent and fascinating, and I’m looking forward to doing more reading.

Fat Girl Says…

I highly recommend this book from the standpoint that it focuses on self-love and common sense tips in all areas of beauty – both inside and out.

The Birth Control Debate

Rush Limbaugh seems to have gotten himself into yet another pickle because of the crazy things that come out of his mouth.  Seems he needs to change his filter from his brain to mouth.

As I understand it the debate right now is whether is all insurance companies should be required to cover birth control regardless if they have a stance against it, religious or otherwise.  That may be dumbing it down but that seems to be the gist of it.

I have been lucky to have previous employers where it wasn’t an issue.  Because of that maybe I don’t understand the full scope or magnitude of the problem.  That being said, I’m not sure why it’s an issue though I am not quite understanding why it is an issue.  I can see both sides of the argument and argue with both of them.

If a private employer opts to provide healthcare coverage to its employees, they have a choice of whom to pick.  If they choose to pick a provider who does not cover birth control, that is their right.  They are obligated to share this fact with their employees, both current and prospective.  But it is their right.  This could mean that a prospective employee should look elsewhere if this coverage is important to them.  I know of several people personally who turned down a job due to lacking healthcare coverage so this argument is valid.

Continuing with this argument, if an employer changes providers after 10 years, let’s say, and the new provider doesn’t cover this, I believe the employer has a duty to offer additional coverage or supplemental coverage to its employees mainly because the coverage had previously been a standard.  New employees would be offered the new coverage, but why should Susan, who has worked for them for 10 years have to give up her coverage?

The only comment that I have on the religious argument is that if an employer opts to have coverage that doesn’t cover birth control, I imagine that correlates to its values and beliefs, whether right or wrong, and it would seem a women who would use that coverage may not be a good fit for that company.  But who knows?  Ultimately, the two should have nothing to do with each other but in many small businesses, religion is at the forefront.

Bottom line I think birth control should be covered by all insurance providers for the simple reason that birth control is widely effective for other reasons besides preventing pregnancy.  It can balance out hormones, treat ovarian cysts, treat PMDD and PMS, as well as preventing pregnancy for women whose life would be at risk if they got pregnant.  Also, wouldn’t it be best to help prevent pregnancy and lower the number of children abandoned into the system or abused?  It would bring down the costs of insurance, doctor bills, health and welfare programs, and who knows what else.

Even if you disagree with birth control usage in any way shape or form, it seems to the pros of making it available to all women far outweigh the cons of unwanted pregnancies and other health issues.  Just because a women takes the pill doesn’t make her a slut.  I took birth control for three years before I even had sex because of ovarian cysts.  It’s possible those saved my life, or at least my reproductive system.

Everyone needs to get over it and worry about bigger issues like kids who don’t get meals at home, who live on the street, and who are abused.  This is more important that birth control.

Birthday Cake Oreos Are Awesome

Tonight I’m being an over-achieving mother and making cute little treats for my son’s class tomorrow because it is his birthday.  And I owe the idea to being a fat pregnant girl with weird cravings.  I love eating frosting straight from the tub, especially when pregnant.  The other night I gave my son a Oreo with a dollop of frosting on top and that’s when inspiration struck.

I went to the store today to get supplies and they had Birthday Cake Oreos to celebrate Oreo’s 100th birthday.  Well, I just figured there was confetti in the cream and that was that.  Until I opened them.  It smelled like a cupcake factory in a bag.  Oh my goodness.  It’s not just sprinkles in that cream.  It’s cake in there.

So I topped the Oreos with vanilla frosting, dusted them with sprinkles, and topped with a couple gummi bears.  The result is below.

Birthday Cake Oreos as Birthday Treats

There are enough for 2 per kid but they seem pretty rich so I think each kid will only eat one.  Which leaves some for me.  Because of course I couldn’t ‘sample’ the cookies because there is just enough for 2 per kid.  I’m crossing my fingers here people.  Or I might send the hubby to the store for more cookies.

Yeah, that’s a better idea.

Biggest Loser, I’m Sorry

Chism-Biggest Loser

After my fight with Biggest Loser last week, I feel compelled to apologize because last night’s episode sucked me back in.  I cried, oh how I cried.

The players all went home for 18 days with the challenge of losing 5% of their body weight in order to gain immunity at the next weigh in.  The red team did awesome with only Kim and Mark not meeting the goal.  Fast forward to the black team and in the end, it left Chism with only needing to lose 12 pounds in order to secure his team a win.  His goal was 16 pounds I believe but only 12 pounds was needed to win.  I should mention everyone else on the black team had met their goal.

Chism, who is so stinkin’ cute, loveable, and seemingly a great kid, hopped up on the scale thinking “I got this!”  Only he didn’t.  He only loss 11 pounds.  This meant an automatic loss for the black team and automatic elimination for Chism since he was the only one who didn’t meet the goal.

I should mention that the red team players up for elimination would have been Mark and Kim.  Mark is Chism’s dad.  Yep.

All sorts of tears were shed by all members of the team.  Mark offered himself up as a sacrifice because he has less to lose than Chism.  It seemed like Allison was down with this, though I don’t think she has the power.

Chism eventually took it like a man, gave a great speech and hugged everyone.  It was heartbreaking.  One of the only likeable people going home.  But he accepted responsibility.  And it was great to see the players showing emotions finally and depicting was a great kid this is.

I hated to see him go but I think it brought Biggest Loser back to wear it needs to be.  About the people, the emotions, and the consequences. I wish Chism the best because he is a great kid and has so much life in front of him.

How ‘Bout A Little of The Ultra Random?

{| class="messagebox" style="ma...

Between the Daytona 500 being postponed for the first time in NASCAR history, the lame Oscars, and a few hours of Fallout 3 on the Xbox, I’m a little off kilter today.  To be fair it started out that way on Friday and went downhill from there.

We will have just a bit of the randomness today just to keep things alive around here.  But first I’d like to say a big thank you to those who subscribe to this here blog, those who stopped by for the first time, and those who may not like me in the slightest but still visit because last week was the biggest week of Fat Girl Approved.  We topped out at 141 visitors for the entire week.  Maybe to super bloggers, this is a drop in the bucket, but I appreciate every one of you!

Onto the random!

  • Bruce Willis as Hartigan. There’s a new G.I. Joe movie coming out that will probably suck on a the level of the recent Transformers movie but I will still watch it because oh my goodness, Bruce Willis.  He is a so freakin’ sexy, I almost can’t handle it.  The baldness, the smirk, oh the muscles.
  • Really Florida weather?  The biggest weekend of stock car racing and you gotta have the crappiest weather of the last two weeks?  Don’t you understand my need for Dale Jr., Carl Edwards, and the yummi-ness that is Tony Stewart.  I better see a race this afternoon.
  • I am beginning to think that the the freedom to say what you want, when you want, and how you want is a privilege that is being abused.
  • My son turns six on Friday and it is freaking me out more than when I turned 30.  Doesn’t help I’m nearly 5 months pregnant and I’m kind of feeling like an adult.
  • Want photos to decorate your home?  Go HERE.  Yes, that is a shameless plug, bite me.
  • I hate my dog.  He has reverted to very bad habits and some days I want to kill home.
  • Do not eat ground beef after two years of nearly exclusively eating ground turkey or you will not leave the bathroom for a while.
  • I start my new classes on the 13th and I’m scared to death.  On the upside, when I get done I’ll know just how crazy I am.
  • Stay-at-home-moms get a bad wrap for many reasons but man, mothers in general need to take a freakin’ chill pill.  Don’t believe me?  Head over to The Stir, pick any article, and read through the comments.
  • I’m on like week 7 of my Hair One shampoo and I’m loving it so very much.  I’m using less of it, my hair is oh so awesome, and it’s well worth the $10 a bottle.

That is all for today!  Again a big thank you to all who take the time to visit and to read!

Biggest Loser, We Need To Talk

Cover of "The Biggest Loser: The Weight L...

I have loved Biggest Loser since the beginning.  Bob Harper makes me swoon, Jillian used to scare me, and Allison is pretty good as a host.  There have been players you love, players you hate, and some that just make you wonder.

I have had moments where I didn’t care for the portrayal of the weight loss.  By that I mean that it didn’t show the fact that the food in the house was limited and monitored, the players exercised upwards of 10-12 hours a day, and that the players did nothing but lose weight.  I have always felt that it makes it harder for us Average Joes by setting unreal expectations.

For the most part however I have found that there was always a player to connect to, reasons to keep tuning in each week, cheering when each person met a particular goal, or crying right along with them when they’ve hit their breakthrough.  I have loved the approach of Bob, Jillian, and now Dolvett in how they push each person to their limit, almost breaking them, and then building them back up.  I appreciate the desire and need to dig into the why of the weight gain.

But my dear Biggest Loser, this just might be my final season.  Why?  There seems to be a lack of fire in these players, too much whining, complaining, unlikable players, and insane game play that borders on stupid.

If you haven’t watched lately, there is the black team (Bob’s) and the red team (Dolvett’s) that are made up of couples that have been split.  Two weeks ago I believe, maybe three, a team that didn’t quite make the cut back in the beginning were allowed back in the house after losing more than 60 pounds back at home.  Immediately they were shunned by their respective teams.  Granted some of their attitude was a bit much for just entering the house but the teams seemed determined to not accept these two.

One player in particular, Conda, did nothing but talk crap to anyone and everyone, even within hearing distance of the players, which I am sure added to the negative feelings.  I do not care for Conda at all in general because she whines a lot, talks about everyone, and just doesn’t seem like she really wants to be there.

Anywho, week before last one of the returning couple, Adrian, was sent packing after all sorts of infighting, crap talking by Conda, and terrible gameplay.  As a result, his sister and partner Daphne took it upon herself to seek revenge.  It started by her going head to head in a competition against her enemy Conda, winning, and making the red team look bad.  Tuesday night she once again took control of a challenge by eating 1,800+ calories, moved Conda to her team, and basically started all kinds of shit.

Long story short, the entire team lost their shit, the black team threw a weigh in, Daphne herself threw the weigh in, and the trainers were livid.  My thinking is Daphne knew they were gonna throw it, decided to join in the fun, and her only goal was to tear everyone down-which it most certainly did.

Here’s my beef after all that: Biggest Loser used to be about supporting each, losing weight, and becoming a better person.  Sure there has been gameplay, alliances, and strategies but never to the extent we saw on Tuesday.  But aside from that, with the exception of Cassandra and the boys Jeremy and Chism, there are not many  likeable people on the show.  They are bickering, whining, excuse giving people who don’t seem to really want to the lose the weight.  And the numbers show.  We are used to seeing huge numbers and many of these people have lost 50 pounds or less in the last weeks.  Granted that much lost in that amount of time would be great, but not when your only job is to lose the weight.

Biggest Loser has turned into Subway-pushing, whining endorsing, excuse accepting, high school children who aer supposed to be wanting to lose weight and figuring it all out.  I really hope that this season turns around because I do not want to watch another episode like Tuesdays.  I was disgusted with everyone and I’m sure I’m not the only one.
